From Brand Identity to a Social Media Design System

Social media brings together a wide range of content and formats. A company's presence should be recognizable without making every post look the same. That's why we develop design systems that provide a clear visual framework while leaving enough flexibility for posts, Reels, Stories, and changing content.

For us, the existing brand identity is the starting point. Colors, typography, imagery, and graphic elements provide the foundation, but they often need to be adapted for social media. What works on a website, in a brochure, or in an advertisement doesn't automatically translate to a small smartphone screen or vertical video.

We begin by defining the visual principles for the relevant channels. How should headlines be used? What role do photography and video play? Which shapes, layouts, or graphic elements create recognition? And how prominent does the logo actually need to be? The goal is not to create a collection of fixed templates, but a set of principles that can be applied across different types of content.

From there, we translate these principles into the relevant formats. A feed post has different requirements for layout and information than a Story or Reel. Vertical formats, square graphics, video, text overlays, and carousel posts each require their own approach while still feeling like part of the same visual system.

This flexibility becomes particularly important with ongoing social media management. Topics change, new formats emerge, and some content needs to be created on short notice. A well-developed design system makes it possible to respond to these changes without losing the visual consistency of the overall presence.

In our day-to-day work, this means we don't create an entirely new visual direction for every post. At the same time, we don't rely on the same template over and over again. Depending on the content, existing design elements can be recombined, expanded, or deliberately reduced. This keeps the overall presence varied while maintaining a distinct visual identity.

A design system also makes ongoing content production more efficient. Once the core visual principles are established, new creative assets can be developed more quickly and different formats can be coordinated more easily. At the same time, there is still enough flexibility for special topics, campaigns, or new content ideas.

We work with companies, skilled trades businesses, and public organizations to translate their brand identity into a flexible social media design system—from the visual foundations to individual posts, Reels, and Stories. The result is a recognizable presence that can continue to evolve over time.
